The reasons for the Emancipation Proclamation were 1) to keep Britain from siding with the south, and 2) to unify the north by making the war about more than just preserving the union. Many in the north opposed it because they feared that free black men would move in and take their jobs, but overall the majority of white northerners were opposed to slavery.
