While he wasn't born into slavery, being Norwegian and having been born in Wisconsin, my grandfather was born when slavery in the United States was legal in states that permitted it. My father is still living. So...it's possible that someone living has a father who was born into slavery.
One of my great grandfathers was a Union Vet.. Most 'white' people didn't fight to free enslaved Black people, or at least that wasn't their prime reason, but to preserve the Union.
