I have lived in London for over a decade, and my experiences with the NHS would not recommend it as a system that any American with a proper sense of perspective should aspire to. My worst (probably) NHS anecdote involves the time my wife had to be admitted into an NHS hospital over the weekend, where the waiting room was quite literally being used by the local drunks as a safe place to hang out after pub closing time, where we had a protracted argument with the admissions desk to get her on an all-female ward - a room with rows of beds - and where she, at last, was forced to suffer the indignity of being handed a flashlight to use if she needed to go to the "loo" in the night because the bathroom light had burned out.
