Regular burns are not necessary for all species of tree, but making 'breaks' in the forest is a good idea to keep burns from spreading. That's why logging is a good idea: selected areas of the forest are cleared, the cleared area becomes a firebreak. Even Bambi is happy because the cleared area becomes a meadow. When fires happen, and they will happen regardless, at least they stay contained/containable between the new clearings.
