Overall, I pretty much agree with Sowell's "Random Thoughts", but I'm concerned about his statement, "Those who favor huge cuts in military spending seem not to understand that our military exists not simply to win wars..." Perhaps the key word here is "huge" and the statement is OK. But I'm concerned Sowell may have bought into the idea that it's OK for the USA to have a military "Empire" & that we really need 800+ bases in 120+ nations around the world in order to protect our homeland from attack. This, of course is nonsense! If we stopped being the world's policeman at our expense (which we can't afford now anyways), we could have a STRONGER military by recalling the troops, closing foreign bases & using money saved to upgrade them.
