I am a native Pennsylvanian who is teaching in public Texas! Why? 1) The state far overproduces teachers in it's university systems and private universities. 2) The union benefits and collective bargining contracts have made it very cozy to stay in a teaching position forever. In other words , few natural openings available. Supply and demand runs headlong into government largess. Not a good prescription for a healthy job market. Here in Texas at my high school we have NONE of these perks , yet somehow manage to get the job done. I sense that my Pennsylvanian brethren will soon be looking at our situation as the future of education , due in part to their own legacy of system abuse and public sector union thuggery.
