(1) A lot of bad stuff happens between the time when the kids get home and when the parents get home from work. A school problem? No, but an extended school day would help.
(2) "Homework" is a bizarre custom. Why should kids have to spend a couple hours at night supplementing what is taught in school? Why not have separate sessions for study, repetition, problem solving, and Q&A, BUILT INTO THE SCHOOL DAY?
(3) "School sports" is a tradition of very dubious value that schools in Europe and Asia seem to do fairly well without. Get rid of them.
(4) The loss of learning that occurs in June, July, and August is a crime. Short-day Summer sessions could be very beneficial in moving the students forward. If the schools have A/C.
