This bill may not be perfect but it is much better than the direct payments we farmers have been receiving. Jim88 asked why we have these programs. First, it was to keep the farmers in business during the depression along with a lot of other social programs. Then it was to regulate the supply of certain commodities when production far outstripped demand. Today, emphasizing crop insurance is the best plan.
We provide insurance subsidies for homes in the coastal areas, mostly against hurricanes. Why not demand everyone move away from all hurricane prone areas? Same for flood insurance. I can't move my fields and crop insurance is very expensive because of the risk. Either I quit farming or have to have a lot more for my crops.
