Raised Catholic and educated in a Catholic High School, I have thought seriously about the parallel between the 19th-20th Century anti Catholic tenor of American life and the conservative movements approach to Islamism, Sharia and Muslims in America today. While we need to balance our approach, ensuring that we respect the constitutional rights of all Americans, some clear distinctions needs to be made.
Islam, unlike modern Christianity to include Catholicism does accept a clear distinction between the Political and the Religious spheres. "The Law" in Islamic nations is overwhelmingly based on Sharia. Sharia shares some core moralities with the our own legal codes, but is significantly anti-western in some respects.
