I hope you didn't spend too much time reading the book, because you didn't get much out of it. I 'had' the greatest respect for Cato, but I have to re-think that opinion now. What an dumb explanation of altruism. I can't explain it any better than Ayn Rand, so this is not intended for the writer of this article, but altruism is when you 'sacrifice', that is when you destroy value. There is no sacrifice when you donate time or money to something or someone worthwhile. It is not altruistic to support and further something of value to you. When even someone at Cato doesn't understand that, we're certainly doomed.
