Look at Japan. We killed the God of Japan. We were right to nuke them, but when we did, we forced their Emporer to admit he wasn't a God. They are the only nation I know of that actually lost their God. And now, they are dying. They lost their God, and they stopped bearing children, and they grew old, and died.
