I have worked on Indian reservations throughout the lower 48 and Alaska for the past decade and I can tell you that there are Native Americans and there are "Native Americans". The "Native Americans" can be lilly white or jet black or an ifinite number of shades in between. In Oklahoma I met an American Indian of Asian descent who looked like Jackie Chan and spoke with an Okie accent. My head almost exploded.
Also, as a "Native New Mexican" I have seen the affirmative action portion of job applications list one category as "White Hispanic". It refers to hispanics of a more Spaniard strain, (some are even red-headed and freckle faced) as opposed to the Mexican variety that are of mixed European and Native American blood. We're all mutts.
