Silly Reed42, conversion by the sword???? What planet do you live on. And who the heck is Doug Strange? Certainly not a Mormon leader. The only three choices for Joseph Smith's successor were Sidney Rigdon, councilor to Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and Joseph Smith's oldest son who was still a child at the time (there were those who believed that the role of prophet was to be passed through a patriarchal lineage like in the days of Abraham Isaac and Jacob. (All of whom were polygamists BTW)). The Lord made it plain that the successor should be Brigham Young.
