SdAufKla, the IMMEDIATE problems in the Middle East might have their roots in European colonialism, but the real root of the problem is Islam. That has been a troublesome part of the world ever since Mohammed conquered it in the 7th century, destroying the Judeo-Christian cultures that were there, supplanting the inhabitants with Arabs and forcibly converting most of the population. The "terrible" Crusades that Muslims always mention were precipitated by the Muslim conquest of what were previously Christian lands. Modern day European colonialism in North Africa began with the French conquest of Algeria in in the 1830s in response to raids by the Muslim pirate states there. At the time modern day Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire.
