The Declaration of Independence was a statement of principles, and our justification of separating ourselves from England. The Constitution is the practical application of those principles to form a government that would respect and protect individual liberty, State's rights, and limited government. I believe the reason the political left views Roe v. Wade as essentially holy writ, is because it is the ultimate rejection of the principles in the Declaration of Independence. (Roe effectively said that the people exist at the pleasure of the government, and the government is under no obligation to protect them, if it does not deem it in its interest to do so.) Obamacare, if seems to me, is the practical application of Roe v. Wade.
