Alexis de Toqueville observed that American towns were filled with volunteerism and community organizations which provided great leadership development and feelings of ownership and personal responsibility for their communities. He found it to be a powerful cultural attribute of Americans. It appears that progessives want to prevent community, volunteer, and religious organizations from strengthening their communities and instead take peoples' money to pay for bureaucrats to do the job in a more costly and less committed manor. It is a formula for weakening economic democracy and political democracy. Individuals and communities are built by choosing personal sacrifice, personal donation of time, and personal donation of money.
