I was just going to post a similar comment as yours. His exact quote was:

"I doubt that many people under 40 have ever served in the military, or even know anyone who has."

This is so ridiculous, as to border on the irresponsible. I don't think he meant to say it quite the way he did, but he wasn't speaking, he was writing. He had the time to review what he wrote, but apparentely thought that comment was appropriate.
