From McCain-Feingold to Madison

I've noticed that on this thread, as on the corresponding WP thread, most of the angst has been about coporate donations in elections. Do these people not realize that this law applies to all groups? This includes unions, single-issue gounps such as the NAACP and NRA, your local church, your local VFD, etc. Keep in mind that all these groups are composed of citizens who have banded together for specific purposes.

We have allowed a law in which the government has the authority to decide who may say what, how they say it, and when they say it in respect to elections. So all we need is some government enforcer with a grudge to "enforce" against those with whom he disagrees. Sure, he'll be overturned eventually - after the election...

be afraid of us. That's what the second amendment is all about.

Those in government should always be afraid of what the citizens can do to them. Most of the time we can suitably punish them with the ballot, impeachment or recall. We, thanks to the founders, also have the option to use a bullet if it becomes necessary. Also, I'm not sure the "royalty" in DC can depend on the military and police; their oath is to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and *domestic*.

a true revolution.

During the 2010 elections vote against every Representative or Senator who has served more than two terms in office. Then, after the election, pay close attention to what the new folks do and chatise them whenever they start wandering from the Constitution. When the new folks become the old folks vote them out in their turn.

Drug Control Becomes Speech Control

declaring victory in the so-called "war on drugs". This farce of a program is prohibition on steroids, warping the Constitution, increasing crime, and destroying lives.

For most of our history most of these now-illegal drugs were available over the counter. Sure, some people got addicted or otherwise abused the drugs. I would suggest, however, that the damage caused by those realtively few people was a faint shadow of the damage done to our society by the attempt to eliminate drug use.

We now have massive bureaucracies at all levels of government with a vested interest in keeping this "war" going, so don't look for an outbreak of sanity anytime soon.

A Free Press Is an Ugly Press

I sure wish the press would get ugly on some other subjects.

While publishing photos of dying men may help the public understand the reality of war, in today's world of instant information, such photos inevitably will cause hurt to the families. That may be a necessity; it can be argued either way.

Perhaps some reporters could get ugly and do some investigating and reporting on the crimes perpetrated by our political "elites", complete with clandestine photos. Given the hubris and arrogance exhibited by these "public servants" it should be an easy task.

Are there no reporters in today's media world interested in becomeing famous for bringing down some big-time politicians?

Obama's version of team effort.

A Democrat falls behind in an election run; Obama & Co. throw him under that famous bus.

BTW, that Obamabus must have the highest ground clearance of any vehicle on earth!
if it weren't about such a serious matter.

The thin-skinned One is upset and attacks FOX for biased reporting. He should break out a history book and read some of the diatribes hurled back and forth in the early days of the Republic. Political hacks like Washington, Adams, Jefferson, etc. were being slandered and libeled daily. Then there were the attacks against Jackson, who nearly challenged some folks to duels while in the White House.

From Obama, Sanity on Marijuana

I remember reading a news report of a study done on the non-hallucination aspects of smoking marijuana. Seems smoking the stuff has a lot of the health drawbacks associated with smoking tobacco. It might be better if the active ingredient were taken in pill or liquid form rather than smoked.

finds an acorn sometime.

Obama & Co. got this one right. As Chris in AL noted, there is no Constitutional authority for the existing "war on drugs". It has destroyed lives, wasted money, and enriched drug sellers. I'm sure in a generation or so, we'll have some "esteemed families" similar to the Kennedy clan, who made the family fortune running booze during Prohibition.

For most of our history, drugs now considered horrendous were sold over the counter. Some individuals became addicted, but I suspect that the overall damage was a tiny fraction of the present federal policy. Drop the "war on drugs", let the federal enforcement agents find something beter to do, and let the citizens live their lives as they wish and suffer...

Iran Cons Hillary

Upland William Wrote: Oct 21, 2009 12:47 PM
All the nations in SW Asia and the Mid-East are playing a new form of the Great Game that existed in that area up to WWII. They're all trying to build spheres of influence over neighbors using military, economic, and political tools. Israel acquired nukes as a final weapon against its overwealming neighbors. Iran wants nukes in order to intimidate other states, who will then want nukes to protect against Iran, ad nauseum. This same scenario played out repeatedly in earlier times, but the addition of nukes to the mix makes the Game more deadly.

Of course, the really big players are Russia and China, both with centuries of irridentist policy to guide them in the current situation. The only entity with the power to change the...
