The problem isn't that Democrats voted for him in an open primary. The real issue is that Rick Santorium appealed to Democrats to come and vote to disrupt the Republican primary. To me this is inexcusable and will lead to Rick Santorium's decline.
I suppose the reason that Rick Santorium is NOT on the ballot in Virginia (where he lives in the Washington DC suburbs) is because of his superior efficiency. In effect Virginia is a MUST-WIN for Rick Santorium (home state), except that he can't because write-in's are illegal during a primary in Virginia.
I just typed in the word "Rick Santorum" in Google and it returned pretty much what you get when you type in "Mitt Romney" or "Newt Gingrich" or "Ron Paul". What is your point?
And Rick Santorium has only won Caucus States that have non-bindng delegates.
How could anyone vote for a candidate with an organization too weak to comply with ballot access requirements in Virginia?
