That’s a good start. Remember, in a rousing May, 1944 speech, Gen. George S. Patton rallied the troops, proclaiming, “Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser.” “When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball players, the toughest boxers.” He was right. Given the Obama campaigns brass-knuckles, no-holds-barred approach, they know he was right, too. Unfortunately, Romney’s campaign advisers, not least the infuriatingly meek Eric “Etch-a-Sketch” Fehrnstrom, don’t get it. Which means they don’t get Americans. And that’s a BIG problem.

It’s deeply troubling that Republican presidential candidates don’t make a study of the Reagan campaign. Reagan was tough, all the way through. He referred to his opponent as “Mr.” not “President” Carter, leveling the playing field. He didn’t use a high-pitched, whiny voice while citing his opponent’s failures. He used an authoritative tone, such as the tone CEO Romney might have used with investors, and SHOULD use with voters. He had three – not 59 – points: Reduce taxes, reduce spending, and build the defense.

Yeah, and those three points set teh stage for the biggest deficits in history, up until that time.

Wrong, Jack. Had those three points been adhered to, the deficit wouldn't have skyrocketed. Reagan took the Dems at their word that they would enact spending cuts, cuts we're still waiting for. In the famous line from Animal House, "You f*%ked up .... you trusted us!"

With the debates starting Wednesday and the conventions in the rear-view mirror, campaign season is upon us. Those of you who live in a swing state are going to see more of President Obama and Mitt Romney on their televisions in the next month than they see in their mirrors during their morning shave. Oh, the joy you people are in for.

But if this campaign has shown us anything it’s that neither campaign seems to have anyone with any talent for much more than conveying boring facts to a disinterested public in their ads.
