The American right-wing agenda in three steps: Distract you with trumped-up social issues. Shift economic benefits upward. Keep you ignorant so you don't catch on.

I love how the true believers say that conservatives want to shift “benefits” to the rich or privileged. How does that jibe with conservatives wanting a small limited government that doesn’t give “benefits”? All the left has is a bag full of irrational fears of what the conservative boogie man will do if in control; they will end all contraception, chain women to the kitchen, raise sea levels, make the air un-breathable, yet none of it ever comes to pass. We conservatives see liberals winning every fight with real results; almost 50% of the population on government assistance, skyrocketing illegitimacy rate, government consuming 70% of our GDP, ever shrinking industrial base, ever expanding government agencies, etc. Don’t blame us, you’re g

I had just such a conversation with my recent college graduate niece. She was surprised to hear that I had voted for MItt. "So you want to take away my contraception, foul the air and water, keep the poor downtroden," she said. "No," I said, "we want the best for society also. Please get married before you have babies, we want to improve the schools in the inner cities so the kids have a chance, we also want clean air. But we look at the results of policy, not just the intentions." The rest of the family basically sided with her!

I counter those arguments with a series of questions like; are you saying you couldn’t breathe five years ago when Bush was in office? Are you telling me that there are no homosexuals over the age of five because they should have been exterminated under Bush? Are you saying no women or minorities made above minimum wage under Reagan? Are you saying if you had more control over your life, like conservatives want you to have, you would set out to ruin yourself? Are you saying you can’t be trusted with your own decisions?

Funny, that sounds exactly like what the left wing is doing. You must have mistyped that.

Sometimes, looking at the political discourse in this country, I wonder if we really understand the ratchet effect of increasing government programs and power over time: unlike in business, unlike in nature, unlike in, well, real life -- failure is not punished, but at best ignored, at worst rewarded. Once a program is in place, it is almost impossible to repeal, even when Republicans obtain political power because voters become dependent on it.

Progressives have known this for as long as they have been blowing up the bureaucracy. Congressman Henry Waxman famously said that, if it took losing a...
