My response to Steve of CA is simple.

1. post your source because I don't believe it....no one thought of cell phones to the public in 1984.....indeed it was Miami Vice in 1986 that had the first "car phone" which was the size of a box of .50 cal ammunition.

2. Under what administration did the lady in the video say she got her cell phone from; indeed, will vote for because of it?

Once those are answered, the problem becomes crystal clear.

Actually, Mannix (private eye show in the 60's) had a car phone on the show. That was the first I ever saw. Worked more like a radio transceiever.

It didn't say anything about cell phone service in 1984. It said subsidized phone service originated in the Reagan administration.

The program today is being funded not by private non-profit, but by an excise tax started around 1900 to subsidize phone service to rural areas where is was not economically feasable to run service to otherwise. That tax has been there for over 100 years, has accomplished it's aim decades ago, but like any other tax, it is hard to get rid of even when it has served it's function. Once the government gets it claws onyour wallet, it is hard to pry their hands from it.

This video, which is being featured on Drudge, was shot at a protest outside of a Romney campaign rally in Ohio.  It appears to have been organized by the SEIU:

Interviewer: You've got an Obama phone?

Obama supporter: Yes!  Everybody in Cleveland or minority got a phone.  Keep Obama in president, you know?  He gave us a phone.  He's going to do more.

Interviewer: How'd he give you a phone?

Obama supporter: You sign up if you're on food stamps, you're...
