The Forestall was preparing to launch a strike against North Viet Nam and dozens of armed aircraft were on the deck and maintenance men were doing final checks. One three man armament crew was doing checks on an F-4B Phantom loaded with Zuni 5" rockets using a volt/ohm meter. The volt/ohm meter showed an open circuit as should've been but the sailors using it missed that a circuit breaker button was popped and the circuit was in fact closed. ...circuitry test, one of the Zuni's fired, frying the two poor saps behind the Zuni pod and flying across the deck and through a 2,000 gallon external fuel tank slung under McCain's A-4C Skyhawk. The Zuni did not fly far enough for the warhead to arm but it put a huge hole in the fuel tank and lit the fuel on fire which eventually cooked off the ammunition on McCain's plane and dozens of others. McCain's A-4 was armed with 2,000 pound bombs and they killed off most of the fire fighting crew when they went off.

There's quite allot we can fault McCain for but this ain't one of them.

Earlier I submitted the above post but time did not permit explaining that the resulting investigation of the accident (all military aircraft accidents are investigated to find a cause and prevent repeats) found fault in the Simpson analog multi-tester unit, the design of which dated as far back as the early 1950’s.

There is a tiny plastic button on the face of the unit about the size of a pencil lead for the circuit breaker that, when popped, sticks out above its normal height about one 16th of an inch that was over-looked by men performing the aircraft maintenance on that fateful day.

When investigations like that happen the results are shared with all five services that work on aircraft maintenance (Army Air Force Navy Marines...

...and Coast Guard) no matter which one the accident originated in so as to keep it from ever happening again. As a result, the Simpson analog multi-tester is well known in military aviation circles for its connection to the Forestall accident.

Thanks for setting that straight, Dave. Yet another imbecilic comment by jafo the Marxist error machine.

Apparently, former Vice President Dick Cheney thinks it was “a mistake” for John McCain to have chosen former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney said it was a mistake for Republican Sen. John McCain to pick Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee.

"The test to get on that small list has to be, 'Is this person capable of being president of the United States?," Cheney said on ABC's "This Week."

"I like Gov. Palin. I've met her. I know her. She - attractive candidate. But based on her background, she'd...
