The Great Divider

The difference between Reagan and Obama could not be more stark. Reagan had a great and abiding faith in the common citizen, and in the common citizen's capacity for self governance. Reagan epitomized abundance mentality. Obama epitomizes scarcity mentality. He has no faith in the common citizen. Obama has no faith in *you*. Obama thinks you must *be governed* (for your own good, of course). And so you cannot be trusted to responsibly keep and bear firearms. You cannot be trusted to purchase on your own the goods and services that best suit your own wants and needs. In fact, you cannot even be trusted to define your own needs. Tocqueville has a name for that which Obama embodies: soft tyranny. I've had a bellyful of it. Have you?

Well, the reason Obama was elected and re-elected is that the majority of people that voted had had a bellyful of bullying by evangelicals and extreme right-wingers who have devolved into nasty, negative name-calling ranters. I've never heard such vulgarity from people calling themselves Republicans and conservatives. I grew up in an Ozzie and Harriet household where there was respect and courtesy for everyone and mother served dinner she cooked herself every day. Nobody was obese. Now we have fast ugly food and too many eat at their computers. That is what has destroyed family values.

I'm an Evangelical. Tell me how I've bullied you or someone else.

Dear Critic,

It was wholly a pleasure to hear from you about our president's Second Inaugural address, which you found uplifting, eloquent, enthralling ... while I felt safe in asserting that, well, it wasn't Lincoln's. Surely that fact is beyond dispute.

I do thank you for writing; I learn most from my critics. Sometimes, like you, they pose a good question, as you did.

You noted that I quoted from the great inaugural addresses of the past -- Jefferson's and Lincoln's and FDR's -- in contrast to Barack Obama's. But what about more contemporary presidents, you asked. Can I think of...
