I think it would've been profitable long ago, if farmer's had moved what crops they could, into a sterile, enclosed environment. Building the enclosures would be a one-time cost (except for expansion). This would also cease the use of pesticides. The plants could be set to minimize bending over. The workers would be protected from the elements and have access to bathrooms. Use of solar and wind power could run lights (LEDS maybe) at night; 24/7 for those plants that can take it. No killer frosts, no rotating fields. If farmers had put their money into such endeavors, instead of paying off politicians.....
