The breakdown of our mental health system is almost certainly the primary cause of all of these mass shootings. Every shooter has had serious problems that were known, and nothing was done about it, because nothing could be done about it under our current system. Achieving the balance between getting the dangerously off the streets and abusing the rights of those with less serious problems will be very difficult. Psychiatrists, insurance companies, schools and family members will have to work together.

It also needs to be acknowledged that these lunatics nearly always turn out to be on SSRI antidepressants. There needs to be a real investigation into the safety of these drugs. But it's a big money industry, and big pharma contributes to campaigns so I won't hold my breath.

It's well documented that SSRIs, adderall and ritalin can cause depression as well as suicidal and violent thoughts in adolescents and even young adults. Their hormones and brain chemistry change rapidly. Too often, they are thrown at "problem children" by general practice physicians at the behest of teachers or frustrated parents. They should only be administered under the care of a psychiatrist, along with therapy and close monitoring. They often mask severe mental problem that need more intensive treatment, including hospitalization against their will. Something the ACLU has made virtually impossible.

Because I cannot imagine the pain the parents of Sandy Hook are suffering, I hope every senator agrees to meet with them and hear them out.
