A couple of days ago, I stopped at my dentist's office to pay my bill and got to talking with one of the "girls" behind the front counter. The woman seems to be a conservative who probably votes Republican. Her daughter, she said, is a 1st grader who recently came home from school and announced that, if she were old enough to vote, she would be voting for Obama. Yes, the propaganda starts early... The demographics are not with us, nor the economics, nor the "stupidification" of the younger generation by the schools, nor the success of efforts to replace the "bourgeois virtues" with the ethics of the Sexual Revolution and the welfare culture.

Then, the good times weren't over. In fact, they were coming back, with the Reagan recovery, the renewal of the American spirit and the end of a Cold War that had consumed so much of our lives.

Yet whoever wins today, it is hard to be sanguine about the future.

The demographic and economic realities do not permit it.
