If "virgin" only means young unmarried woman, then Mary's statement in Luke 1 doesn't make much sense. She was obviously questioning how she would get pregnant without having had sexual intercouse. However, even as a conservative, evangelical Christian, I have no trouble with the concept that the Genesis account was a story conveying the truth that God created the world and that things came in a certain order. So I have no trouble with believing that the earth is very old and that God created it.
