Is it really the first appearance of the phrase? Maybe its just the first appearance that you know of. Regardless, there would not be any Christians if not for the Jews. Remember, Jesus and the Apostles were Jews and most of the first believers were Jews. After they accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour, they did not stop being Jews and they did not stop celebrating the Jewish holidays. They just used all things Jewish to point out how Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah. Jesus said He did not come to do away with the law (Torah), but to fulfill the law.
