You're right, Julie: Treat defense spending the same as all other federal spending. Oh, wait, if we do that, it'll go up. You argue we can cut defense spending but ignore the massive amount of government spending unrelated to defense, so my question is this: Are you concerned with cutting government spending or just cutting military spending? If you argue we can cut military spending, why not advocate for cutting overall spending by the same percentage amount? I never hear that argument and I wonder why. Fact is our Constitution mandates providing for the national defense but doesn't mention social program spending.
The U.S. National Debt has surpassed $16 trillion. Out of control spending habits of both Republicans and Democrats got us into this fiscal mess. The only way out is through dramatically slashing spending across the board—no exceptions.

Both parties must be willing to cut their “sacred cows” from the bloated federal budget. Democrats need to put social welfare spending on the table and Republicans need to stop protecting Pentagon spending at all costs. Or else we will pass on a mountain of debt to the next generation.
