I remember when this happened, and I'm glad the parents are following through. My students (private school) have pretty much no idea where I stand. We even have debates (in Spanish) on things like nationalized healthcare. Most are from Republican families and complain if I've assigned them to the pro-socialzed medicine side. I tell them they should be able to defend either side - that knowing what the other side believes helps you defend your side better (hence, why I listen to NPR every day). I help both sides with ideas equally - they really have no clue that I'm a strong Conservative. THAT, you idiot, intolerant geometry teacher, is what we are to do! (I sometimes let them know the last day of school, if they are still curious.)
