So far most of the comments have proven you correct. What are you, some kind of mind reader? lol
If you would care to read the first two paragraphs of the SI article, you can read for yourself about Coach Steckel. Evidently he does not deny instructing his pro players to make those types of blocks and he doesn't apologize for it either. And perhaps religiosity wasn't the right word, I should have used Christianity instead.
I take you llikely didn't read the article. Now go wipe the spittle from you face.
How do you know want all the readers of SI want? How do Klavan and Hewitt know? Have you read the SI article? It speaks to the topic of the contradictions of football and religiosity. Do you think Les Steckel should be CEO of the FCA when encouraged his players to use very dangerous cut-blocks on the opposing team while in the NFL? He showed no regard for his opponents well-being. How Christ-like.
From the article we find Athletes in Action pays the salary of the NY Giants' team chaplin. You would think the well paid players could afford to pay for their own chaplin and save AIA the money for other things. They should be embarrassed.
I read the entire SI article, and haven't a clue as to why Klavan or Hewitt find it upsetting. It was a thought provoking article, thanks Hugh. If anything, Christians dhould be livid that such an immoral man as Les Steckel is the president and CEO of The Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The man instructed his NFL players to go for the opponents knees when blocking downfield. Very serious injuries often result from cut-blocking, but good Christian Steckel has no regrets about coaching his players to do just that. Pathetic. Funny how most of the comments here ignore the substance of the SI piece (sports corrupting religion), but instead post the usual conservative tropes about the Left and religion. Funny, but not surprising.

Yes, it would be a lot easier if socons went away. You see, it is hard to defend the GOP when social conservatives want: A) Christian creation myths taught as scientific fact B) Abortions laws that would exclude a safe harbor for abortions due to rape and incest C) Their religious mores ensconsed as law If you want to defend the socons and the GOP on these things, be my guest. I've quit the party.

1) You might recall the comments of candidates Akin and Mourdock last year. They told the women of America that if they had their way with the abortions laws, pregnant rape and incest victims shouldn't be allowed legal abortions. Good way to attract female voters GOP. 2) Elements in the GOP that want Christian creation myths taught in science classes. Broun's comments are just one of many examples of GOP pols beclowning themselves over evolution and the big bang theory. These type of GOP pols frighten away intelligent, educated voters. 3) Social conservatives want to impose their religious value system on everyone via politics. Problematic in this day and age. That is the brand that is out there. Perhaps rebranding is in order.
