The False Modesty of 'Nerds'

Wait-wait-wait, gotta give examples. It helps complete the image. Nerd: Kurt Gödel, an introverted genius who became so obsessed with his mathematical proofs that he starved to death. Friend of Albert Einstein, a better-known nerd who was not so introverted. Geek: That kid from school who could tell you every last detail about a video game, collectible card game, or anime series? Yeah. Him. Also the guy who memorizes sports stats and plays fantasy football daily(He's under the protective sports umbrella, though). Dork: John Arbuckle. Socially inept and burdened with obscure and eccentric interests. Also Napoleon Dynamite; need I say more? Disclaimer: I'm probably all three. I'd like to *think* I'm not too much of a dork, though...

Washington is full of nerds. I know. I speak nerd, not fluently mind you, at least not anymore. But I certainly know more than a few phrases memorized from a Berlitz nerd-to-English phrase book. I can talk Dungeons & Dragons (both D&D and AD&D). I know about the Golden Age of Comics (as in comic books -- if you thought that was a reference to Bob Newhart's heyday, subtract 20 nerd points right there).

Anyway, if you spend any time in Washington you'll find nerds. What happens is most of them sublimate their fixations with comics, or baseball cards, or 1960s...
