Let me add one that class-warrior Sen. Tim Harkin actually said on a C-Span call-in program: "Rich people don't buy anything that creates jobs. They spend any extra money they get from reduced taxes to buy German cars, diamond jewels, and yachts."

I love Ann Coulter! But, Ann, please be careful They are always looking to catch you at something. And when they quote you, or anyone, they are not quoting what you capitalize and what you don't. So, " that helping blacks was not the Democrats' priority. Even the ones who wanted to, such as Bobby and John Kennedy, couldn't risk upsetting the segregationists, more than 90 percent of whom were Democratic." I know what you said, but you need to say not "Democratic," which sounds like an adjective of philosophy, but "Democrat Party members," which is all they are. I think "that helping blacks was not the Democrats' priority," but a priority of democrats. .The simpletons follow them, so don't make it simple for them to distort you any more than is inevitable.
Hey, next time I want to hit a black person, I can say, "That's for Kitty Genovese," can't I? [look it us, gun-grabbers.]
One point I forgot. The 2000 election in Florida may have been decided by Hispanics. The outrage over the armed apprehension, arrest, and return to Castro's Cuba of Lil' Elian virtually from Kendall Coffee's (former US Atty who worked for Reno) arms in the Little Havana Miami house was a real Biggie for them. It was very unlikely they could ever vote Democrat after that outrage.

The 1965 Voting Rights Act might have become the trump card in the contentious 2000 election in Florida. The Florida Supremes "changed" the voting rules for Florida when it decided to depart from the statute. The VRA says a state cannot change it voting laws without the prior approval of the US Attorney General. Janet Reno was never asked and never gave her approval to the Fla. S. Ct decision so their ruling was illegal under federal law. Ted Olsen persuaded the federal Supremes to get it right.
Goldie, You know about the Intelligence Quotient research, don't you? The majority of the people are below 101 IQ. Market analysts operate with a contrary indicator that "the majority (odd lotters) are always wrong," If you believe in "the majority of people rule" you will get an incorrect outcome every time. When it was a majority of literate, educated, landed gentry of adult men, the outcomes were more correct. Mr. Hitler obtained the majority of the German votes, With a 142 IQ, I have a civic duty to vote to cancel out the vote of a 58 IQ Democrat. You need further study, Ms.Lox.
"Gongloff?" I don't want to be ad hominem here, but that sounds an awful lot like "goniff," doesn't it? Which means "Crook, thief, burglar, swindler, racketeer' according to my "Book of Yiddish Proverbs and Slang", by Fred Kogos (Poplar 1970) p.160. You think, you'd want to change your name, rather than be introduced as "Mr. Swindler" in a Tax Policy debate. Maybe Apple could move their HQ to Hong Kong and turn Cupertino into a branch office for the US. How would you like THAT, Mr. Goniff?

When I saw Kubrick's "Lolita" at an impressionable age, I realized that a man could lose everything if he followed his heart into love with a gorgeous adolescent. I've always pitied Humbert Humbert and said, "There but for the Grace of God, go I." Quilty deserved to die.
If I remember correctly, Theodore Roosevelt was a Republican. Progressive, perhaps, but still a Republican. He liberated tons of people in Puerto Rico and even more tons of people in The Philipines from oppressive colonialism. didn't he? "Remember the Maine!"

I'll take McPherson's view on Lincoln before Goodwin, although she is a fine woman. She is no McPherson. My favorite tourist t-shirt in NY is "New York Fuckin' City." Captures the town's essence.
