Brillliant column, Michael! I have an similiar analogy. About a decade ago, my beloved Minnesota Twins were in the same position the Mariners are today. The Twins played in the worst stadium (the Metrodome). Our situation became so bad that the Twins were almost contracted out of baseball. Look where we are today: The Twins clinched the AL West Division on September 21, have a beautiful new ball park (Target Field, the BEST fan experience in all of professional sports; sorry, it's true Cub, Yankee, and Green Bay Packer fans).
