The statement that you cannot physically deport 12 million people is ludicrous. Nobody says that you need to do it overnight. Contract out with Greyhound and charter bus services across the country if necessary. The cost of deportation would be easily offset by the savings in education and healthcare alone.
The focus on the border seems overblown. Yes, secure the border to some reasonable level, but the focus needs to be on the interior of the country. We need to aggressively go after the employers. They are providing the largest magnet for illegal immigration. They also are the greatest beneficiaries of taxpayer subsidized “cheap” illegal labor. The illegal immigrants have made a rational decision to reap the benefits of US life and the employers are happy to let the taxpayer pick up the bill. Sullum has just been bought off by the business owners. ENFORCE the law. Fix & fully implement E-Verify. Fine and imprison employers who employ illegal immigrants. Most of the illegal aliens will self-deport.

Thanks Larue, the H1-B programs is one of the most abused programs in the US. The fed makes no effort to enforce even the minimal regulations designed to protect Americans jobs from being undercut.
Bryan, if there is such a HUGE shortage, basic economics would say that wages in those fields should have seen a HUGE increase. What fields are you referring to? The only widespread wage increases that I have seen in the last 10 years are in finance. I think that we have MORE than enough financial wizards, thank you.
Bryan, you do realize that we allow 1 million legal immigrants each year. So you are suggesting a total of 5 to 6 million immigrants each year? Admittedly, the higher value immigrants would provide a greater value. I would be a little more concerned about the middle class wage earners that would see their wages decreased by such a large influx of immigrants. You only need to look closely at the widely abused H1-B program to see the negative impacts of importing foreign labor to undercut the wages of IT engineers. The H1-B program was designed for filling “high skill” positions that could not be filled by Americans, in practice it has ruined the careers of many STEM professionals.
@Redneck, Please use your own checkbook. The taxpayers pay over $10k per year for K-12 for each child of illegal alien parents. I agree that all children in the US should be educated, however the kids and their parents should have been sent home years ago. Illegal aliens have bankrupted the states. The small amount of taxes that they pay does not come close to the direct social costs. Enforce our immigration laws and many of the state & local budget problems will go away.

Husker2 you make some good points about the “In God We Trust” national motto. I would certainly agree with you if the banner was in the context of official mottos. For example, if it was in a display of state and national mottos. Unfortunately, the article only lists banners displaying a “U.S.A. as a Christian Nation” context. This is where the teacher stepped over the line. He was advocating a particular religion. Christ, Christian and God are not mentioned in our Constitution (except Year of our Lord). Earlier drafts of the Constitution did contain religious references, which were removed before the final version. David and Cia are correct in stating that several of the banners were related to our animosity toward the “godless”...
Obama signed a statement- therefore he lied.
Pelosi made a statement about Women’s health – therefore she lied.
Wow, Ms. Monahan is a serious scholar. No concept of proof or that a statement may mean just what it said.
Poster: Constancio has his own problems with reality. His statement of “fact” concerning his soul has a wonderful sense of self-importance. His concept of life/conception/soul is an interesting debate on medical definitions and of course faith. It is not settled science.

Mr. Phillips must not get out much or follow the news. His statement “I dare say that men like Madison and Cushing would not recognize the America of today, filled with politicians afraid to confess their faith or educators fearful of offending the sensibilities of their students with any mention of God.” First regarding politicians, how many politicians claim to be “without faith”. At the national level, I can only remember one avowed atheist and a few non Judeo-Christian politicians. Not a big threat to faith in God. They may not all believe the same as Phillips, but he should look up the meaning of “filled with”. In the case of educators and religion, they are welcome to share whatever faith they profess outside of the classroom. ...
