As the father of a 9 year old, and a 19 month old, I would willingly pay for private security, or even better in my opinion, armed and trained teachers. I am leery of having uniformed officers in a school, not because I don't think they would make a difference, but because they would be the first shot in an attack. At the very least, armed teachers in addition to an officer would provide backup for that officer because no one would know who else was armed. The police officer would be a deterrent to some degree, but the possibility of additional teachers being able to assist would add to it. My thought is if the teachers trained with the assigned officer, that would do so much more to provide an effective defense.
In my opinion, you're way off-base on this. Sometimes the criminal is willing to just take your stuff, but I spoke with a co-worker yesterday about a friend of his. The man was recently robbed at gunpoint, and after he gave the thugs everything they asked for, they shot him twice in the stomach. He's still recovering in the hospital, paralyzed from the waist down. My question to you is was it worth him taking what I suspect you would endorse as 'the high road,' and not attempt to defend himself? If he would have pulled his own pistol (hopefully as he moved to make himself a harder target,) and shot the thugs, he might still have gotten shot, but he also might have 'stopped the attack,' since as a rule, criminals look for easy prey.
