That's because they mortgaged the farm a year before the banks went under and the credit froze up. Why? Because FORD WAS 3 MONTHS FROM GOING BANKRUPT!!! [source: "American Icon" the book about Ford's turnaround]. It was in no way that Ford was any better off, in fact they were so bad they would have went under first (Chrysler and GM would have followed shortly after). Ford did take the handout and in fact still owes the government: http://www.forbes.com/sites/joannmuller/2012/08/29/automakers-report-card-who-still-owes-taxpayers-money-the-answer-might-surprise-you/

No, they refinanced then because they had no choice. They were literally months from going under and had to do something or cease to exist. Read "American Icon" to get the real story. Ford also still owes us money... http://www.forbes.com/sites/joannmuller/2012/08/29/automakers-report-card-who-still-owes-taxpayers-money-the-answer-might-surprise-you/

My Community is Southeast Michigan and I am seeing it as well. GM re-opened a closed Assembly Plant in Lake Orion to build the Chevy Sonic and Buick Verano last year. They also expanded the Detroit Hamtramck Plant to build the Volt and are also bringing Impala production from Oshawa to Michigan. Then there is the added shifts at Lansing Grand River to build Cadillac ATS. Not to mention the component plant expansions to build the new powertrains. Going under??? Doesn't seem like it to me and I am getting my information from myself and not some uninformed lady trying to sell books by slamming Obama in a web opinion piece...

Actually Sales of Chevrolet passenger CARS increased 25 percent.. In fact, the Spark, Sonic, Cruze, and Volt each posted best-ever monthly sales.

The Volt is the best selling electric vehicle BY FAR in the US and it has the highest customer satisfaction that Consumer Reports has ever recorded (over 90%). Any new technology takes a while to get going. As long as the Volt sales continue their volume increases each month (August was the highest since launch) it should be considered a success.

GM builds the only competitive B-Segment vehicle (the Sonic - selling very well btw) in Lake Orion, Michigan. In fact every single vehicle GM sells in the United States (except for the micro Spark, just released) is BUILT in North America! Yeah, Ford is tearing it up (Ford stock price in January - $12, stock price today - $9)
