I'll tell you a story of a Government run amok... my small county of 56,000 has a Olympic Swimming Pool, why I have no idea cause I just moved here under 3 yrs ago... Now this (out door pool) has black algae and our great city, and county want to tax all the property owners to fix it... The cost to fix it is estimated at $500,000 and I believe it will come back in less then 10 yrs... The other problem with this whole mess is it's an out door pool here in Oregon where it snows and gets down below zero sometimes in the winter and they want to keep it filled year around and heated. To me that's like heating Walmart without a roof.

Continued from my comment above.......

I just can't believe any other city/County in the US or in the World for that matter of less then half a million has a Olympic Pool and mostly not one of just 56,000. This is not a College pool which here in this little county has just one little Mickey Mouse College...

I would hazard a guess that the company on contract to MAINTAIN said pool is owned by a friend of one or more of the county commissioners etal.

As a public finance economist, I normally focus on big-picture arguments against excessive government.

If the public sector is too large, for instance, that undermines economic growth by diverting resources from the productive sector of the economy.

The damage is then compounded by a needlessly destructive and punitive tax system.

But I’ve also discovered that it helps to personalize the analysis by pointing out examples of ridiculous and wasteful behavior by government.
