1. 32 yrs in Marine Corps..now retired. 2. Shotgun (NOT double barrelled, but pump with 4-6 rounds) IS the best Home Defense weapon. If 12 gauge loaded with 00 buck shot is has too much kick, a 16, or even 20 gauge will work. However, you need good instruction and some range time to be effective. 5.56mm or .223 caliber FMJ will go through walls (well dry-wall anyway). 3. A good hand weapon - do research on the internet - is a good thing. A really big handgun is no good if you do not have it with you. Thus, a smaller caliber is better, with JHP ammo and back up magazines. Again, research and practice is necessary. 4. Think of everything you might use as a weapon. A good tough pen IS a good weapon...sure better than nothing.
