Your suggestions make sense - but only if the crooks that we lock up are are forced (goodbye, aclu) to WORK while they're in our jails, the funds being used to feed, clothe and medicate the bastards. Thanks to the libbie/demmie/progressives, they get free legal assistance as well, all paid for by the taxpaying, decent citizens whom the crooks have feasted upon all their useless lives.

Agreed that prisons should be self-supporting, but it's no excuse not to lock up criminals. The costs they impose on society and victims far outweigh costs even at the most liberal prisons.
