Modern liberalism is a largely irreversible mental state that relies on perceptions, and is threatened by facts. Liberals absolutely revel in such as the Martin case because it supports their belief that conservatives are evil racists, and if conservatives are evil, then their beliefs must be incorrect, and if their beliefs are incorrect, then - happy day! - liberalism is Truth and Goodness.
The more lurid and shrill the Martin case becomes, the more discredited conservatives become - and the better liberals can feel about themselves. Hack politicians, like Obama and Pelosi, use this technique daily because it is so effective in energizing liberals.

My favorite example of liberals' inability to grasp reality is minimum wage laws. The facts demand the conclusion that rising minimum wages raise prices and reduce employment, especially for youth, and most especially for minority youth.
So you tell a liberal, "Every increase in the minimum wage increases black teenage unemployment". One response is a vacant stare, as if you'd asked a cat a math question. The other response is a tirade against you, your family, and everyone you know, along with a pre-scripted torrent of rhetoric about social responsibility, racial sensitivity, and Asian sweatshops that makes the liberal just damn proud to be liberal.
At no time does the liberal address the facts.
