Just some clarification: Steroids do NOT damage human organs horrifically. Taken the way they are intended, they are really safe with few adverse side affect. The problem arises when people abuse them, much like anything else. Also, the Lottery doesn't take 50% then the taxes. The 50% comes from the fact that the money is in an annuity. That's why, if you wait and take the money over 20 years, you get the whole thing. The lump sum payment is (actually not half but what you've actually won which is the cash value plus the interest that accumulates. Think of it as a savings bond, it doesn't mature for 20 years) the money you get upfront, not including the interest you would have gotten over 20 years.

I like to bet on sports. Having a stake in the game, even if it's just five bucks, makes it more exciting. I also like playing poker. "Unacceptable!" say politicians in much of America. "Gambling sometimes leads to 'addiction,' destitute families!"
