In response to:

The Bogus Threat from Shariah Law

Chapman is, as usual, dead wrong. Islam is unique among world religions in that one of its bedrock principles is that infidels must be converted or killed. And not (yet) in Kansas, but definitely in Detroit, Buffalo, and parts of New Jersey, courts have allowed arguments in civil and criminal abuse cases that Muslim immigrants should be allowed to apply Shariah even when it was at odds with US and state law. It is against that kind of subversion of our Constitution and basic liberties that various state legislatures are belatedly taking action. One hopes that the Supreme Court will reverse the lower courts, uphold Oklahoma's anti-Shariah statute, and confirm that Shariah's medieval codes have no place in American justice.

Yes- absolutely!. We had better be praying for that kind of wisdom in the minds of the judges of lower courts. Hopefully it is not too late and those judges have not been deceived about Islam's ancient goal- submission and power.

In the 19th century, Catholicism was regarded by many people in this country as thoroughly incompatible with Americanism. They saw it as a hostile foreign element that would subvert democracy. Today, a majority of the justices on the Supreme Court are Catholic, and they are taken to be as American as Mountain Dew.

We've come a long way in religious tolerance. Or maybe not. The belief that Catholics are irredeemably alien and disloyal has given way to the fear that Muslims pose a mortal threat to our way of life.

That distrust is behind a push in state legislatures...
