Doctors may push both, but they don't push the diet hard enough. People can get off many medications if they consume a plant based diet, but many doctors feel it is too radical for people to follow. I've seen many stories of people who would have died from their next heart attack if they had not changed their diet, and their doctors did not suggest a plant based diet. One lady's doctor basically told her to go home and wait to die because she wouldn't survive another heart attack. Luckily, she found Dr. Esselstyn and she is still living today.

Instinct tells us to fear poison. If our ancestors were not cautious about what they put in their mouths, they would not have survived long enough to produce us.

Unfortunately, a side effect of that cautious impulse is that whenever someone claims that some chemical -- or food ingredient, like fat -- is a menace, we are primed to believe it. That makes it easy for government to leap in and play the role of protector.

But for every study that says X is bad for you, another study disagrees. How is a layman to decide? I used to take consumer...
