The Assault on Food

The Standard American Diet that the government has devised for us to follow is not a healthy diet and is contributing to a lot of the healthcare costs. The USDA should not be deciding what we should be eating because they have too many financial ties to the food industry. They made us believe that the only good sources of protein and calcium come from animal products. Yet, it is these animal products, along with sugar and highly processed foods, that is causing the heart disease, diabetes, many cancers, and autoimmune diseases. Americans only get 12% of their calories from plant foods and about half of that is from french fries. Highly educated nutritionists with no ties to the food industry should be suggesting what Americans eat.

I have no "beef" (sorry!) with your opinion, but who would fund the nutritionists?

Exactly, they decide what we should eat depending on political contributions. Soy beans pooh yuck.

I kinda, sorta agree with a lot of what you say. Certainly, you should take whatever the USDA says with a big grain of (preferably) sea salt. I don't think animal products in themselves are causing the epidemic of obesity, since people have been eating meat and fat since the dawn of time. I agree that sugar, white flour, and highly processed foods are the main culprits.

Yes, people ate meat, but they were not eating the amounts of meat we consume today. If you look at different cultures from around the world, those who eat a lot less meat have much lower rates of heart disease and cancer. Cholesterol, one of the main culprits of heart disease is only found in animal products. Plant based foods contain all the nutrients that help prevent many diseases. We definitely consume far too many of them.

Careful there .... with the sea salt. I do not think that they have found a way to get the whale sh*t out of it! Or porpoise .... octopus .... seal ... turtle ...

But they're the government! And they're here to help!

My research demonstrates that people who have eaten diets high in vegetables, all died.

Instinct tells us to fear poison. If our ancestors were not cautious about what they put in their mouths, they would not have survived long enough to produce us.

Unfortunately, a side effect of that cautious impulse is that whenever someone claims that some chemical -- or food ingredient, like fat -- is a menace, we are primed to believe it. That makes it easy for government to leap in and play the role of protector.

But for every study that says X is bad for you, another study disagrees. How is a layman to decide? I used to take consumer...
