I worked for a major oil company in late 60s early 70s, the oil depletion allowance made it very favorable for exploration on land and off shore. It boggles the mind at the amount of untapped reserves we have on hand here in the US. We discovered the N/S Dakotas oil reserves, shale oil, back then but did not have the technology to recover it. The US Gov took the allowance away from big oil and that is when the brown stuff hit the fan for consumers, ie the Department of Energy was formed to get us off foreign crude purchases @ 10% at that time and now we are up to 30%, with 18,000 employees of the tax dollar at around $20 billion payroll and $5.00 a gallon Uh huh, who's your daddy
