Tilting the Newtown 'Conversation'

The discussion needs to be about mental illness. That is the root cause of tragedies like this. Not inanimate objects, not video games or movies. Mental illness. In the mad scramble to make sense of all of this, to find a reason and a cure, everyone is focusing on the exact wrong thing. People want to place blame on the NRA, on Hollywood, on conservatives. They're all wrong. Period. Banning guns won't stop a lunatic from being a lunatic. Wishing violence upon the NRA, besides being despicable, won't protect anyone from a madman. Bashing Hollywood and video games does nothing to stop this. Until everyone is mature enough to put aside their petty political differences, to stop with the ideologically based rhetoric,

WHY some person goes on a murder rampage does not matter. there can be 100s of "whys" ,and we cannot catch them all before they kill people.

What matters is that we have good guys with guns in place to stop them before their killing spree runs out of ammo.
We do that by allowing lawful armed carry in most places open to the public, and allowing armed school employees.
We can't afford having police or armed guards in every school,at every entrance, nor everywhere in public.
Having armed teachers (and other school employees)is like having plainclothes police scattered all around the school,at no cost. it's the smart thing to do. The same goes for armed citizens in public places.

I agree with everything you posted.

I was addressing the root cause of these tragedies, and that is mental illness.

Mental illness is the cause but the liberals won't allow us to put such people away in asylums. Walk the streets of NYC and you will come across many deranged individuals who fortunately don't have access to weapons or a mother who will teach them how to shoot them!

Exactly right Robert. If you look at the profiles of some of these school shooters, you'll see that they've had mental evaluations and in some cases were on medication to treat mental disorders. They had people that knew them and would later say they weren't surprised they snapped.

But good luck getting "the system" to do anything meaningful for these people. They just write a prescription and send them on their way.

Identifying, treating and actively supervising mentally ill people is the way to prevent these tragedies. Arming and training someone in the schoo is the way to stop it once it's begun.

to quit demonizing people and things that have nothing to do with the real reason tragedies like this happen, we're doomed to repeat them.

So to people like Marg Helgewhatever and Joyce Carol Oates and that idiot from Rhode Island, shut your stupid mouths, grow up, and start using that lump of crapola 3 feet north of your backsides for once instead of letting your emotions dictate your decisions.
It's too hard to try and make sense of a senseless event. Adam Lanza's merciless slaughter in Connecticut has forced everyone with a microphone to insist we have a "national conversation" about why this happens.

But this urgent need to talk is not an excuse for a reckless discussion. Sadly, that is where we're headed, with pundits hysterical, naive or both.

Predictably most in the media went straight to the Left's Alpha and Omega: blaming excessive "access" to guns. It was also an excuse to open fire on the National Rifle Association. For example, author Joyce Carol Oates...
