But this urgent need to talk is not an excuse for a reckless discussion. Sadly, that is where we're headed, with pundits hysterical, naive or both.
Predictably most in the media went straight to the Left's Alpha and Omega: blaming excessive "access" to guns. It was also an excuse to open fire on the National Rifle Association. For example, author Joyce Carol Oates...

What matters is that we have good guys with guns in place to stop them before their killing spree runs out of ammo.
We do that by allowing lawful armed carry in most places open to the public, and allowing armed school employees.
We can't afford having police or armed guards in every school,at every entrance, nor everywhere in public.
Having armed teachers (and other school employees)is like having plainclothes police scattered all around the school,at no cost. it's the smart thing to do. The same goes for armed citizens in public places.
I was addressing the root cause of these tragedies, and that is mental illness.
But good luck getting "the system" to do anything meaningful for these people. They just write a prescription and send them on their way.
Identifying, treating and actively supervising mentally ill people is the way to prevent these tragedies. Arming and training someone in the schoo is the way to stop it once it's begun.
So to people like Marg Helgewhatever and Joyce Carol Oates and that idiot from Rhode Island, shut your stupid mouths, grow up, and start using that lump of crapola 3 feet north of your backsides for once instead of letting your emotions dictate your decisions.
