It's hopeless at this point. Obama will push for amnesty (using the code words "comprehensive immigration reform"). The American people will do just like they did under Bush when he asked for it and crush the attempt. During the next election, the Dems will blame the Republicans (instead of the majority of Americans), and the spineless Hispanics who care only about Hispanics will vote Democrat again, giving the Dems the margin they need to stay in power.

A great political party with a long history can survive defeat, even learn from it and grow stronger. But a party that does not learn from its defeats, that appears unable to adapt and grow, cannot remain great. It will join the extensive collection of long-ago American parties, like the Federalists and Whigs and many another, as just another artifact of American history.
