It's not necessarily fraud. I know someone who has been unable to get a job in his field, which is office-type work, for 4 years. Once he was out more than 6 months, recruiters and hiring manager refused to even talk to him. He took any jobs he could get - landscaping, tree service, etc... but he has bad knees and hurt his back. He's in pain all the time and simply can't do physical work like that, so is considering disability. He's single, no kids, so gets SNAP and Medicaid but nothing else. He's trying to start his own business, but it's hard to get a foot in the door. He doesn't want to do SSDI, but his options are really limited.

What a difference a few month makes.

Last month we were told by a fawning news media how great things were. The economy was a little engine that could.  And the declining unemployment rate was touted in headlines as significant progress toward economic recovery.

Unemployment rate falls to 7.8% in September, reported the Washington Post- a four-year low...”nearly”… whatever “nearly” means.
